Netcomplete 4.0 for Windows 95 comes with either the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape Communicator 4.0 web browser. System Requirements ============================================ Before installing Netcomplete, make sure your computer meets the following requirements: -IBM compatible PC with a 486 or higher processor -VGA graphics card -Color monitor recommended -Mouse or other pointing device -14.4 bps modem or faster (28.8 Kbps recommended for Web) You have a choice of web browsers with Netcomplete. The following table lists the system requirements for Netcomplete with each browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Netscape Communicator 4.0 RAM: 16 MB RAM: 16 MB Disk space: standard 51 MB Disk space: standard 25 MB Disk space: advanced 86 MB Disk space: advanced 35 MB B. Installing Netcomplete 4.0 ============================================ If you received Netcomplete with your computer or with a CD-ROM product from one of our partners, please refer to the documentation materials (provided by the computer manufacturer or CD-ROM vendor) for Netcomplete installation instructions. Dial-up Networking (Windows 95 Only) ============================================ Dial-Up Networking is the software your computer uses to dial your modem and make a connection to the Internet. If you do not have Dial-Up Networking installed on your computer, Netcomplete will install it for you automatically. To verify whether you have Dial-Up Networking installed, do the following: Go to the Start menu on the taskbar and select Programs | Accessories. Dial-Up Networking is listed under Accessories if it is installed. IMPORTANT: If you do not have Dial-Up Networking installed, the Netcomplete setup application will prompt for your Windows 95 CD or floppy disk so that it can install Dial-Up Networking. To install Netcomplete for Windows: 1. Start Windows and insert the disk or CD into the appropriate drive. Windows 3.1 a. From the Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu. If you are using Windows 95, choose Run from the Start menu on the Taskbar. The Run dialog box will appear. b. In the Run box, type the path to the setup program. For example, a:\setup for a floppy diskette or d:\win95\setup for a CD-ROM. Click OK or press Enter. The first screen of the Netcomplete installation program appears. Windows 95 a. The Netcomplete welcome screen appears automatically after you insert the CD. Depending on the speed of your CPU, it may take a few minutes for the welcome screen to appear. b. Click the Install Netcomplete link. The Netcomplete installation program appears. CAUTION: If you inserted the Netcomplete CD before you started Windows 95, you must manually launch the Netcomplete installation program. Click Start on the taskbar and choose Run from the Start menu. The Run dialog box appears. In the Open text box, type: d:\win95\setup.exe where d is your CD-ROM drive letter. Click OK or press Enter. The first screen of the Netcomplete installation program appears. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Netcomplete 4.0. If you do not have Dial-Up Networking installed, you will need your Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM. 3. When the installation is complete, you will be asked if you want to use an existing account or set up a new NETCOM account. WARNING: If you already HAVE a Netcomplete account, select the option "Use an Existing Account". Do not set up a new account. If you NOT have a Netcom account, select the option Set Up a New Account. New Account Notes: To set up a new account, you need a major credit card to complete the registration and to open your Netcom account. If this account is being provided to you by your company, you may not be asked to enter credit card information. If you set up a new account, you will be asked to enter the registration number and serial number printed on the back of the packaging. If you are installing from floppies, the registration and serial numbers may be on the address label. 4. After the installation is complete, the Netcomplete installer may need to restart your computer. Windows 95 NOTE: In Netcomplete 4.0 for Windows 95 the web browser installation starts when the Netcomplete installation finishes. After the Netcomplete software is installed, a dialog box appears asking if you want to install your web browser-- either Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, depending on which CD-ROM disc you inserted. Click OK to run the web browser installation program. After the web browser is installed, you are prompted to restart your computer. 5. When you finish installing Netcomplete, start Netcomplete and log in. To start Netcomplete, double-click on the Netcomplete icon that you just installed. Either the Netscape Communicator or the Internet Explorer web browser will start automatically. C. Application Notes ============================================ To report problems with the software or request enhancements, send email to: U.S.: bugs@ix.netcom.com Canada: support@netcom.ca ***Do not install Netcomplete or the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 included on this CD on a Windows NT workstation. 1. Installation Error A "Divide by zero or overflow error" may occur if you press while Netcomplete is installing either the Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer application. If this occurs, restart Windows and run the installation program again. Do not press during installation. 2. Netcomplete Mail Caveats A. E-mail Attachments You may not be able to open certain file attachments from within the Netcomplete Mail application. If you cannot open an attachment, do the following steps: 1. Save the attachment to your hard disk. 2. Start the application, and then open the file. B. E-mail Tab Labels If you installed Netscape Communicator, Netcomplete Mail may display the size, date, sender, and subject fields of email improperly--it shows the size of the message in every field. A patch has been made available by Microsoft to upgrade Windows 95 and correct the problem. When you first insert the CD, click on the following link in the Autorun installation program: "Run Microsoft ComCtl32 Update" B. HTML Mail Netcomplete Mail does not support HTML formatted text. If someone sends you an e-mail message using HTML formatted text, the e-mail message will either: --contain HTML formatting tags --appear twice--with a copy of the message containing HTML formatted tags To avoid having HTML tags show up in the body of e-mail messages that you receive, ask people to send you e-mail using standard ASCII formatted text. C. Mail Notification with Additional Mailboxes Only the primary account e-mail address can be notified about new mail. This affects users whom you have given an additional mailbox (e-mail address) to in the following two ways: --Users with additional secondary mailboxes will NOT be notified about new mail automatically when they log in to Netcom. Users with additional mailboxes will have to open Netcomplete Mail and select Get New Messages to see if they have any mail. --Users with additional secondary mailboxes will see notifications if the primary account e-mail address has new mail. Because mailboxes are password protected, the additional users will not be able to download the Netcom account holders mail. Java Ticker Applications If you use a Java-based ticker application that does not check your Windows 95 registry to find your default web browser, the ticker application can bring up the Netcomplete web browser that is used when you sign up as a Netcom customer, instead of Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The ticker application can bring up the Netcomplete web browser when Netcomplete is running and your default web browser is NOT running. If the Netcomplete web browser appears when you click on the ticker application, close it. Start your default web browser, and click on the ticker application again. 4. Changing Web browsers If you install a version of Netcomplete with a different web browser than the one you had previously (either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator), your previous browser application will NOT show up in the Netcomplete toolbar. To have both browsers show up in the Netcomplete toolbar, you must manually add the previous web browser. To do so, refer to the Toolbar entry in the online help index. 5. PeopleLink Registration PeopleLink is a FREE instant messaging service. To use the PeopleLink service, you need the following 3 things: --a connection to the Internet, which you get as a Netcom customer --an e-mail address, which you get as a Netcom customer --PeopleLink software, included on this CD But to use the PeopleLink FREE instant messaging service, you must register with PeopleLink. To register with PeopleLink, do the following: A> Install the PeopleLink software. B> Start the PeopleLink software C> In the PeopleLink Sign In dialog box, enter your e-mail address in the E-mail field. Do not enter anything in the password filed. It should say D> Click the Sign in button. E> In the Register dialog box that appears, click the Register button. F> Your web browser is launched and takes you to the PeopleLink Registration page. Follow the instructions to sign up for PeopleLink. TIP: Use your Netcom services password as your PeopleLink password. Your services password is the password you use to access e-mail. 6. Upgrading from NetCruiser When you upgrade from NetCruiser to Netcomplete 4.0, you cannot overwrite two .dll files. Two error messages appear asking to overwrite a .dll file. You must: Click the No button to skip the .dll file. The installation will then be completed successfully. D. Getting Help ============================================ 1.
